  • The objective of student financial assistance is to assist eligible students who do not have the resources to meet the costs of postsecondary education.
  • The purpose is to supplement, not to replace, the financial resources that you (and your family, if applicable) are expected to contribute. Assistance is based on financial need as established by the federal and/or provincial governments and as determined by the ministry through an assessment of your Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) application.
  • Educational costs (such as tuition fees, books and supplies, basic living expenses) and the resources that you (and your family, if applicable) are expected to contribute are taken into consideration. It is not the purpose of student financial assistance to supply all the assistance you may need to meet your educational and living costs.
  • It is recommended that you apply as early as possible using the correct application for your academic year. You should submit your OSAP online application at least 10 weeks before your classes begin, to allow sufficient time for verification and processing.

Checking out funding options:
Loans, grants, bursaries, and scholarships may be available to you through OSAP, but are not the only source. You should check with your post secondary institution to find out about institution-specific funding options.

You can also check out the 'Access Window - Post Secondary Planning Tool' in the OSAP website. It:

  • Allows you to check what financial aid is available to you at the school you want to attend.
  • Allows you to check on the amount of monthly payments you will be paying back after school.
  • Allows you to learn how OSAP works.

You can also find some helpful information at  Financial Aid Office at your post secondary institution.
