Doctor Shortage Notice
Calling All Future Doctors - 2020 Vision
There is a doctor shortage in Ontario and in the entire country. This is a well known fact. Out of concern for the quality health care for our people, Six Nations is advocating for a “cohort” of eligible Aboriginal medical students to be admitted in 2007 and every five years after that until the year 2020. We call this our 2020 Vision.
By the year 2020 – we expect that a significant number of Aboriginal physicians will be practicing in Ontario. What is a significant number? Anywhere from 60 to 120.
If the cohort idea does not materialize we will continue to work with faculties of medicine currently offering facilitated admission to their medical schools. We expect that our eligible students will be admitted to medical school one way or the other.
Most faculties of medicine in Ontario are well aware of our advocacy initiatives and are either responding positively or already taking steps to work with us to make 2020 Vision a reality.
We need qualified and dedicated people to work for the future health of our people. We are convinced that Aboriginal physicians will make a significant contribution to a healthier future for all.
Please consider medicine as a career. The basic requirement for admission is a three year undergrad degree (any discipline) with at least a 3.0 gpa. It is wise to include at least biology, organic chemistry or chemistry in your undergrad studies.
